Belgium 2010

Students discussion “religion and racism”

  1. How important is religion for you? Explain.

For the most Belgian students, religion isn’t important anymore. They don’t go to the church and they don’t know much about their own religion.

But there are also Belgian students who pray and go to the church. They got their power out of their believe. So everyone has his own opinion.

In general, religion is more important in Turkey than in Belgium. Religion is their life style. The people who give importance to the religion try to stay away from bad behaviour and sins. For all the students religion is important, but some follow all the rules and some don’t.

Also in Poland it depends from person to person. Some are religious and go to the church and some aren’t religious. You can’t say that in some countries religion is more important than in others. It depends from person to person.

  1. how about wearing religious symbols? At home, at school?

In Belgium, the most students don’t wear religious symbols. In the school there is a cross in every class and in some lessons, they pray before class starts. In most official places, you can’t wear religious symbols.

Also in Turkey religious symbols are forbidden in official places and schools, because it’s a secular country.

In Poland you can wear religious symbols everywhere.

  1. Somebody often has the religion of his/her country. So people are not free choosing their religion? What do you think of this statement?

In every country (Poland, Turkey and Belgium) almost everybody accept the religion of their parents.

In Belgium, you have your baptism when you are 1 year old, so you cannot decide if you want it or not. Most of the people in Belgium are catholic, because it simply goes from generation to generation and not a lot of people make the effort to discover other religions, because they are afraid for it or they think their families wouldn’t accept.

In some families, the parents wouldn’t be angry if they say that they will chance their religion. But in some families, the parents will be angry. This is also something that depends from person to person and not only from country to country.

  1. Does racism exist in your school? Give examples.

In IKSO (Belgian school) there is a little bit of racism. In one class they had hang a flag of the ‘Flemish lion’ sometimes it is seen as a symbol for a political party who are racists. But the students are punished.

In Poland and Turkey there isn’t much racism in school, but this is also because their aren’t foreign students in the school.

  1. Political parties use racism as a topic. Give examples.

In Belgium, political parties are separated. You have parties in Flanders, Brussels and Wallonia. There is a party in the Flemish community ‘Vlaams belang’ translated ‘Flemish interest’. They have a anti-immigrant position. They are very conservative and they want foreign people to go back where they belong.

Also in Poland, there is a political party who use racism as a topic.

In Turkey you had one political party which was supported by some Kurdish people. This party helped PKK terrorists. For that reason, it was abolished and closed a few months ago.

  1. Political parties with a racist programme often have success. Will it enforce or hamper the integration of foreign people into societies?

In Belgium, where they have more foreign people than in Turkey and Poland, many people aren’t open for new cultures or religions because they have prejudices about other people. The political parties who have a racist programme get more and more success, but because of the political system, they don’t have a lot of influence on new laws,… so they don’t hamper the immigration a lot.

In Poland and Turkey, you don’t have many foreign people.
